From Damascus, we moved to Homa. The town is known for is very pretty waterwheels. Those of you familiar with the work of Thomas Friedman might reconigze this place as the source of the term "the Homa Rules." A Muslim Fundamentalist movement was centered in Homa in the early 80's. Then president Hafez Al Assad decided to eliminate the threat by sending in the military. The army, led by Assad's brother, promptly leveled the city, inflicitng over 20,000 civilian casualites. After this, Assad was never truly challenged by the fundamentalists. I suppose that's ONE way of taking care of a problem...
