Here we have Palmyra. Along with Petra and Angkor Wat, this is one of the most impressive ruins on earth. The Palmyrian empire was situated between the two superpowers of its day, the Romans and the Parthians. Hence, they controlled the very lucrative trade routes that connected those two empires. Queen Zenobia, one of the most charasmatic rulers in history, pushed the Romans almost out of Syria. She personally led her armies, commanding not from her capitol, but from the battlefield. Though she was eventually defeated, the Roman Emperor Aurelian was so impressed by her determination that he granted her clemency.
